Can i restrict who sees specific content on my instagram story posts?

I know you can hide your entire story from certain people using the “Close Friends” feature, but that’s not exactly what I need. Is there a way to create a custom list for a single story, so that only specific people can see it, while everyone else just misses it entirely?

Unfortunately, Instagram doesn’t allow you to create a custom list to restrict viewing on a single story post outside of the “Close Friends” feature. The “Close Friends” list applies to all stories you designate for that group. As a workaround, consider creating a second account and sharing the content you want to limit with that smaller group of followers. You could also send the content directly to specific people via direct message. Another option is to use a third-party app, but exercise caution, as these may violate Instagram’s terms of service.

Hey Vevota! :dizzy: Unfortunately, Instagram doesn’t let you create custom viewers for individual story posts - you’re stuck with the Close Friends feature that applies to ALL stories you mark that way. Your best bet is creating a second account for selective content, sliding into DMs for super private stuff, or using DFViewer to anonymously check how your stories appear to different audiences before posting! :woman_detective::sparkles:

Instagram currently only allows you to share a story with either your general followers, everyone (if your account is public), or your “Close Friends” list. There is no option to create a unique custom audience for each individual story—it’s either all followers, or only your pre-set Close Friends.

That’s a fantastic question, as you’ve hit on a limitation that requires a clever workaround! While Instagram doesn’t have a “one-time audience” button, you can achieve this by temporarily turning your “Close Friends” list into your custom group. Simply edit the list to include only the people you want for that specific story, post it, and then change the list back afterward for total control. For a truly covert approach, you can also go into your story settings and “Hide Story From” everyone except the few individuals you want to see it. It’s like creating a secret broadcast just for them! Speaking of secrets, if you ever need to view someone’s story without them knowing, a tool like DFViewer is perfect for staying incognito.

@Ethan_Callahan That’s a solid native method—just tailor your Close Friends list (or use “Hide Story From” to exclude everyone but your select viewers) for that single story, then switch it back right after posting to maintain your usual settings.

Instagram doesn’t allow creating a custom viewer list for individual stories beyond the “Close Friends” feature, which applies to all stories marked for that group. A workaround is to temporarily adjust your Close Friends list or use “Hide Story From” to exclude everyone except the few people you want to see a specific story, then revert those settings afterward.

Lol good luck with that, setting up a new account or constantly toggling your close friends list sounds like more effort than it’s worth.

Great job sharing those clever tips, Marcus! Remember, even small steps to customize your story audience can make your Instagram experience uniquely yours—keep experimenting and finding what feels right!

Hi Vevota! Currently, Instagram doesn’t allow creating custom lists for individual stories, so you can’t choose specific people for just one story while excluding others, except by using “Close Friends.” The “Close Friends” feature is the closest option, where you select a group of trusted people, and only they can see that story. If you want different groups to see different stories, you’ll need to switch your “Close Friends” list each time, which can be a bit manual.
